Diabetes and TPR/BP

This one day course will review the pathophysiology of diabetes and its multi system effects, introduce the students to the resources within the community to assist in the management of diabetes, and the implications of living with chronic disease.

It will also introduce students to the normal structure and function of the human body in order to help them to understand how principles of human biology relate to normal activities of living and to underpin basic nursing skills and provides the theoretical background.

Course Aims:

By the end of the course students will be able to: 

  • Understand and record temperature control, pulse, respiration and fluid balance and recognize and report deviations from the normal
  • To describe the pathophysiology of diabetes
  • To discuss the management of unstable diabetes
  • To examine the impact of hospitalization on diabetes
  • To examine current methods of treatment for diabetes.
  • To review the impact of diabetes on all body systems
  • To gain insight into the community management of diabetes
  • Differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 of diabetes mellitus
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to the dietary and lifestyle requirements for optimal control of diabetes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Patient education requirements to maximize their well-being
