During this half day course, students will be instructed on: 

  • Uses of and Administration of medication
  • Standards and Guidelines and Legal requirements
  • Healthcare assistants practice role/s and functions in the context of contemporary health care
  • Reporting systems in place to monitor practice
  • Routes of administration
  • Self-administration of medication
  • Use of Controlled drugs
  • Disposal of medicines
  • Common side-effects of medicines
  • Common Medication errors
  • The importance and necessity of Service user confidentiality

Course Aims:

By the end of the course students will be able to: 

  • Promote patient safety
  • Prepare healthcare assistants with grounding in theory and practice and with the level of competence required to provide safe and effective practice.
  • Facilitate the practice of administrating medicines which allows healthcare assistants to develop and expand their role in order to meet patient needs
  • Enable the administration of medicines to follow evidence based practice
